Types of Acne Scar
Acne is a skin condition which is affecting about 40 to 50 million Americans and many other people in the world. Acne is often caused on the chest, face and back which is most common in 80 percent of people aged 11 to 30 years. It can occur at any age in children aged 20-30 and in adults aged 40.
Some acne leaves scars on the face, back and chest and this should be treated. Healed acne leaves scars and it is not easy to predict which type of acne will cause them. Scars from acne leave the skin of the person looks old and also contributes to the appearance of age as the skin loses its elasticity. Acne scar can be superficial, scattered, deep and extensive.
There are various types of acne scars which are the result of:
Increased tissue formation – In this, scars are caused by building up of the collagen in the skin. These scars are of two types:
- Keloid scars – These scars occurs due to the production of excess collagen when skin cells come in contact with injury.
- Hypertrophic scars – These scars are caused due to heredity and mainly found in American and African people.
Loss of tissue
Acne scars which are the result of loss of tissue are the most common scars and they are of various types:
Depressed fibrotic acne scar – These scars appears to be very large which has steep sides, sharp edges and are firm at the base. Usually, ice pack scars transform into depressed fibrotic scars after sometime. When these scars disappear if the skin is stretched some filler materials like Restylane and collagen are used to fill these depressed scars. Laser acne scar treatment can help the person to prevent this type of scar.
Ice-pick scars – These scars usually occur on the cheek and they are small in size. They can be deep or shallow, hard or soft to touch. Hard ice-pick scars cannot be stretched whereas soft scars can be stretched. These scars can be treated by laser resurfacing and dermabrasion. Sometimes punch grafting is also done for deep scars.
Atrophic macules – They appear to be small on the face and larger on the body. They have a wrinkled base and soft to touch. They also appears blue and converted to ivory white color in people of white skin.
Soft, superficial or deep scars – They appear circular or linear and small in shape. They have sloping rolled edges and merge with normal skin.
Follicular macular atrophy – They usually occur on the back or chest of a person and appear to be small and soft which resembles like whiteheads and take months or years to develop.
